I was recently introduced to a small, independent sock maker with their own factory in Tokyo. What makes them truly special is that their socks are still produced on a knitting machine that is nearly 100 years old. Even today, this machine continues to create socks slowly and carefully, one pair at a time.
One afternoon, the owner of the company happened to stop by our store.
“May I show you our socks? We make them using natural fibers.”
Our shop is not located in a busy city center, nor in the suburbs of Tokyo or any other major city. We are in a quiet, rural countryside surrounded by nature. The owner explained that he had business in Kofu—the nearest large city, still about two hours away—and decided to visit us by chance.
What struck me was the timing.
Just a few days before his visit, a customer had asked for men’s socks made from natural fibers—something warm, durable, and comfortable enough to wear while working in the garden. At that time, I only carried socks for ladies. I remember thinking that perhaps this unexpected visit was a sign.
As soon as I agreed to see the products, the owner returned to his car and came back with a large bag full of socks.
“This pair is wool. This one is silk and wool. This is cotton and linen. This is made from yak wool…”
There were so many materials, textures, and colors—each with its own purpose and character.
I told the owner that I would try the socks myself, and only if I truly felt their quality would I offer them in my store.
I put them on—and immediately understood.
They were warm without being heavy, soft yet durable, and incredibly comfortable. Socks that feel gentle on the skin and supportive at the same time. My feet felt relaxed, protected, and cared for.
In Japan, craftsmanship is not about speed or mass production. It is about patience, respect for materials, and making things that are meant to last.
I choose to introduce products like these socks because I want to support small makers who continue their work quietly, even when it is not the easiest path. These socks are not designed to follow trends. They are made to be worn every day, through work and rest, season after season.
If you value natural materials, everyday comfort, and honest craftsmanship, I hope these socks will become a small but meaningful part of your daily life.
Please feel free to contact us at efe if you are interested in these wonderful socks!
